The water goes under the cabinets, not across the floor
A dishwasher or washing machine failure releases water at floor level directly beside cabinetry. Rather than spreading visibly across the room, it runs under the toe-kick into the cabinet base and along the subfloor, which is why a kitchen can look almost dry while the cabinet run and the flooring beneath it are saturated.
Cabinet boxes are typically particleboard. Once the base swells the run is usually a replacement rather than a dry-out, and the sooner extraction starts the fewer boxes that applies to.
Slow weeps are worse than sudden overflows
A hose that lets go floods the room and gets attention within minutes. A supply connection that weeps runs into the cabinet base and subfloor for months, and the first sign is flooring lifting or a smell. By then the damage is demolition rather than drying.
Pulling appliances out once a year and looking behind them at the connector, the floor and the cabinet base is the cheapest prevention available.

What should I do if the washing machine overflows?
Shut the two supply valves behind the machine and stop the cycle. Pull the machine forward if you can do it safely, because the water behind it is what soaks the wall base. Photograph before you mop — the extent of the standing water is evidence for the claim.
My dishwasher is overflowing. What should I do first?
Cancel the cycle, shut the supply valve under the sink and open the door to stop the pump refilling. Then pull the toe-kick panel off and look underneath, because that is where the water is and where it will otherwise sit unseen against the cabinet base.
What causes a dishwasher to flood?
A failed inlet valve that keeps filling, a blocked drain or air gap forcing water back, a split supply line, a door seal that has hardened, and using the wrong detergent, which produces suds that push out past the seal. The first two are the ones we see most.
Why does my floor drain back up when the washing machine drains?
The drain line cannot take the discharge rate, usually because of a partial blockage downstream or a vent problem. It is a drain issue rather than a supply issue, and it matters here because water backing out of a drain is contaminated — a category above a clean supply leak.
What can I pour down the washer drain to unclog it?
Nothing we would recommend as a fix. Caustic drain products sit in a partially blocked line and can damage older pipe, and if the line backs up again you now have both water and chemical in the room. Mechanical clearing by a drain contractor is the right answer.
Is appliance overflow covered by insurance?
A sudden discharge from a failed hose or valve is generally covered. A connection that had been weeping for months is where carriers argue gradual damage, which is exactly why the cabinet base and subfloor condition gets documented on day one.
